New EU Grant Opportunities for Transport Infrastructure

The European Commission has opened new grant calls under the 2026 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport programme and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), offering substantial support for projects that advance the decarbonisation, digitalisation and connectivity of transport across the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). For organisations in Malta with transport or logistics investments in the pipeline, this is a timely opportunity to secure EU co-financing.

Eligible projects cover a broad range of areas, from alternative fuels infrastructure, such as high-power charging for heavy-duty vehicles, hydrogen refuelling stations, electrification of airport ground operations, and shore-side electricity for ports, to investments that strengthen multimodal connections and freight and passenger mobility across the network, as well as projects that improve the digitalisation, safety and interoperability of transport systems. The grants are relevant to a wide range of organisations, including ports, airport operators, fleet and logistics operators, infrastructure developers, technology and intelligent transport systems providers, and public authorities.

One point worth noting: To access the AFIF grant, projects must be structured as a blended operation, meaning applicants are required to secure complementary loan financing from an officially approved Implementing Partner, and MDB is Malta’s only recognised partner.
