MDB Mobilises Financing for Major Airfield Electrification Investment at Malta International Airport

29 May 2026

The Malta Development Bank (MDB) is supporting a major investment in the electrification of Malta International Airport’s airfield operations, reinforcing its central role in financing projects of strategic national importance.

The Airfield Electrification Project forms part of a wider €12.5 million investment package aimed at reducing the airport’s reliance on diesel-powered ground equipment and accelerating the decarbonisation of airport operations. MDB is supporting the project through a €5.4 million loan and, in its role as Implementing Body of the European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility in Malta, has facilitated access to a further €5.4 million in EU grant funding. The remaining investment is being contributed by Malta International Airport plc.

This financing structure demonstrates the distinct role MDB plays in Malta’s economy. As the country’s only development bank, MDB is able to combine national promotional financing with EU resources and private sector investment to support projects that are essential to Malta’s long-term competitiveness, resilience and environmental transition. The project will enable Malta International Airport to replace diesel-powered ground power units with electric alternatives. It includes investment in new electrical infrastructure, charging facilities, aircraft stand plug-ins and supporting equipment needed to modernise airfield operations.

Once implemented, the project is expected to avoid approximately 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. It is also expected to reduce noise exposure and improve local air quality, delivering benefits for airport operations, surrounding communities and Malta’s broader climate objectives.

MDB’s participation reflects its statutory mandate to finance investment that delivers long-term economic, environmental and social value. Malta International Airport is a critical national asset and a key gateway for tourism, business and connectivity. Supporting its transition to cleaner and more sustainable operations is therefore not only an environmental investment, but also an investment in the resilience of one of Malta’s most important pieces of infrastructure.

Alison Micallef, MDB’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Malta International Airport is a strategic national asset and a vital gateway for our economy. Supporting its transition to cleaner, quieter and more sustainable airfield operations is exactly the kind of highimpact investment MDB was established to facilitate. As Malta’s only development bank, our role is to mobilise the right financing structures, including EU resources, so that projects of national importance can move from ambition to delivery.”

Chairperson Leo Brincat added: “This project is a clear example of why Malta needs a strong national development bank. Strategic infrastructure requires long-term vision, patient capital and the ability to bring together public, European and private investment. Through this project, MDB is helping finance a cleaner and more resilient airport, while supporting Malta’s wider transition towards a lower-carbon economy.”

MDB’s support for the Airfield Electrification Project adds to its growing portfolio of strategic interventions in Malta’s economy, including infrastructure, SME finance, green transition investment, housing and student finance. The project underlines MDB’s role as a central national institution for mobilising finance in support of Malta’s sustainable development priorities

MDB Jimmobilizza Finanzjament Ewropew għal Investiment Maġġuri fl-Airfield tal-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta

Il-Malta Development Bank (MDB) qed jappoġġa investiment ewlieni fl-elettrifikazzjoni tal-operat tal-airfield fl-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta, f’pass importanti lejn operat aktar nadif u sostenibbli.

Il-Proġett ta’ Elettrifikazzjoni tal-Airfield jagħmel parti minn pakkett usa’ ta’ investiment ta’ €12.5 miljun immirat biex inaqqas id-dipendenza tal-ajruport fuq tagħmir li jaħdem bid-diżil u jaċċellera d-dekarbonizzazzjoni tal-operat fuq l-art.

MDB qed jappoġġa dan il-proġett permezz ta’ self ta’ €5.4 miljun u, fir-rwol tiegħu bħala Korp Implimentattiv tal-Faċilità tal-Infrastruttura tal-Fjuwils Alternattivi tal-Unjoni Ewropea f’Malta, kien strumentali sabiex jiġi ffaċilitat aċċess għal €5.4 miljun oħra f’għotjiet mill-UE. Il-bqija tal-investiment se jkun qed jiġi ffinanzjat mill-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta plc.

Din l-istruttura ta’ finanzjament turi r-rwol distintiv tal-MDB fl-ekonomija Maltija, billi tgħaqqad finanzjament promozzjonali nazzjonali, riżorsi Ewropej u investiment mis-settur privat sabiex jitwettqu proġetti ta’ importanza strateġika għall-kompetittività, ir-reżiljenza u t-tranżizzjoni ambjentali ta’ Malta.

Il-proġett se jippermetti lill-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta jibdel tagħmir li jaħdem bid-diżil għal alternattivi elettriċi. Dan jinkludi investiment f’infrastruttura elettrika ġdida, faċilitajiet għall-iċċarġjar, punti ta’ konnessjoni mal-istands tal-ajruplani, u tagħmir ieħor meħtieġ biex jiġi modernizzat l-operat tal-airfield.

L-investiment huwa mistenni jwassal għal benefiċċji ambjentali sinifikanti. Billi tagħmir li jaħdem bid-diżil jinbidel b’tagħmir elettriku, il-proġett mistenni jevita madwar 1,000 tunnellata ta’ emissjonijiet ta’ diossidu tal-karbonju kull sena. Huwa mistenni wkoll jikkontribwixxi għal tnaqqis fl-istorbju u titjib fil-kwalità tal-arja fiż-żona tal-ajruport, b’benefiċċji kemm għall-operat tal-ajruport kif ukoll għall-komunitajiet tal-madwar.

Il-parteċipazzjoni tal-MDB tirrifletti l-mandat tiegħu li jappoġġa investiment li joħloq valur ekonomiku, ambjentali u soċjali fit-tul għal Malta. L-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta huwa assi nazzjonali kruċjali u bieb ewlieni għall-ekonomija, it-turiżmu, in-negozju u l-konnettività tal-pajjiż. Għalhekk, l-appoġġ għal operat aktar sostenibbli fl-ajruport mhuwiex biss investiment ambjentali, iżda wkoll investiment fir-reżiljenza ta’ waħda mill-aktar infrastrutturi importanti ta’ Malta.

Alison Micallef, il-Kap Eżekuttiv tal-MDB, qalet: “L-Ajruport Internazzjonali ta’ Malta huwa strateġiku u vitali għall-ekonomija tagħna. L-appoġġ għat-tranżizzjoni tiegħu lejn operat aktar sostenibbli huwa eżattament it-tip ta’ investiment b’impatt fit-tul li l-MDB twaqqaf biex jiffaċilita. Bħala l-uniku bank ta’ żvilupp f’Malta, ir-rwol tagħna huwa li nimmobilizzaw l-istrutturi ta’ finanzjament, inkluż riżorsi tal-UE, sabiex proġetti ta’ importanza nazzjonali jimxu mill-ambizzjoni għall-implimentazzjoni.”

Iċ-Chairperson tal-MDB, Leo Brincat, żied jgħid: “Dan il-proġett huwa eżempju ċar ta’ għaliex Malta għandha bżonn bank b’saħħtu tal-iżvilupp. Infrastruttura strateġika teħtieġ viżjoni fit-tul, finanzjament adekwat, u l-kapaċità li jinġiebu flimkien investiment pubbliku, Ewropew u privat. Permezz ta’ dan il-proġett, il-MDB qed jappoġġa t-tranżizzjoni ta’ Malta lejn ekonomija aktar reżiljenti.”

L-appoġġ tal-MDB għall-Proġett ta’ Elettrifikazzjoni tal-Airfield ikompli jsaħħaħ il-ħidma tiegħu f’oqsma strateġiċi għall-ekonomija Maltija, fosthom l-infrastruttura, il-finanzjament għall-SMEs, it-tranżizzjoni ekoloġika, l-akkomodazzjoni sostenibbli u l-finanzjament għall-istudenti.
